Another year without roses....

...... and I come to the realization that I will probably never have children......

Danthelyn Bios:

Growing up in an orphanage probably wouldn't be so deplorable -- if your parents had died in some respectable way, like a fire or the plague. But when your lack of parents has been classified as "mysterious disappearance" when their names aren't even listed in the city registry -- well -- that leads to supposition, and to suspect.

It is possible my parents could have merely been travelers passing through, or at the very least, wandering gypsies, but most children, especially the crueler ones, find that sort of supposition boring and uneccesary. It is much more entertaining to torment a lonely girl with:

"Danthe's parents were traitors to the crown!" or
"Danthe has no last name because her parents were hung for treason!"

It doesn't have to make sence to be hurtful, so long as you are kept below the others. Children like to have a pecking order, especially in a place where they themselves are the lowest of the low, the unwanted, the children of the dead.

I must have been no older than six when I was brought to the city orphanage, alone, and with nothing but the clothes on my back. Originally they guessed me for younger, as I was small and wouldn't speak, but I could read a bit and do simple math and write my first name, which was a long one.

Had I a last name, it was omitted from the orphanage registry. I was entered under "Danthelyn Doe" a temporary last name reserved for children before they can find living relatives, who, even if they are unwilling to take on their care, usually provide a background for them. Lacking these, they are usually taken under the wing of one of the orphanage patrons who lend them a name until such a time as they are adopted out.

To my knowledge, I am the only "living" Doe in existance -- as it is a name most commonly left to the unknown dead. But still, for every man in every unamed grave, is there not a family who mourns without an answer? Am I not essantially a child of one of these unnamed dead? A "John" and "Jane" Doe? How approprate for the orphanage to inadvertantly give me the one name I quite literally would have chosen for myself.
